I think it's getting watered down and kinda "gay" as you say now but back in the day it was quite edgy and had very good stories like crest/banner of the stars. Lots of gore, sex and things that weren't normally in animated stuff. Kid shows were always kinda boring but I wouldn't put down a whole type of animation. Just sorry that some of you who just start to experience it consume modern/new anime.

SOME modern anime is OK but it seems repetitive and not really new. Also it's tailored more for international audiences now which was one of the reasons I liked older anime when it was truly unique.

In any case, Ran is cute and ZUN is a nice guy.

It wasn't exactly a loser kind of thing it was a super niche thing because distribution was difficult internationally. It was kinda like being a sci-fi geek/trekkie in the 90s. It got popular because of its merits and it'll probably fall quite a bit at some point because of the dilution of it. It was best when it only tailored to Japanese audiences.
